At the time when cutters harvested wild lavender, they had noticed bigger bedding plants they called “rough lavender” or “crossed lavender” : they were lavandines from the natural hybridization of true lavender and spike.
This hybridization is due to flower-visiting insects especially bees. Being a hybrid makes the lavandine sterile and therefore its replication is only possible by taking cuttings.
By 1925-1930 the method of taking cuttings had become prevalent enhancing lavandine cultivation. There are several species of lavandine such as the “Grosso”, the “Abrial” or the “Super”.
